Bruce Flinchum, a sixth grader at Rappahannock Elementary School, won the county spelling bee by correctly spelling the word “peony.” He defeated 16 other finalists, including runner up Allyson Dodson. Dodson is a seventh grade student at RCES. Flinchum is the son of Roger and Debra Flinchum of Viewtown and Dodson is the daughter of Roger and Sharon Dodson of Flint Hill.
Flinchum travels to Richmond this weekend, April 5, to compete against students from other counties in the state. The state bee will be held at the Arthur Ashe Center at 1 p.m.
The county bee was held on Feb. 26 at the RCES gymnasium and judges for the event were Carol Lucking, Beth Hilscher and Linda Tarry.
The finalists were selected after winning their classroom bees. Each first place class winner went on to compete for the county title.
