Ron Makela, member of the School Board for Jackson District, lost his elected position to Rebecca Cordani on Nov. 2 by 22 votes. He told the Rappahannock News he was surprised Cordani won. But by taking a look at the situation, it became evident to Makela that he was sabotaged.
Makela told the Rappahannock News that four years ago the rightwing Republican group called the Christian Coalition began an agenda to take over a majority of seats on the School Board. The intent: to control the school system.
Makela said that Ron Frazier, on the Board of Supervisors for Jackson District, is a good friend of Jay Katzen, House of Delegates representative for the 31st District. And Katzen will be the Christian Coalition’s choice for Lieutenant Governor at the next state election.
And. according to Makela, Frazier was tiie person who approached Cordani to run for School Board this past May.
The other person involved would be Cordani’s father, Roger, who ran for sheriff eight years ago and lost.
Makela said, “He was never complimentary of the school system and would like to see the superintendent (Dr. David Gangel) fired. I expect he encouraged his daughter to run. This may have been the case w hy she didn’t drop out.”
But Makela does not think this right-wing movement will make an impact on Rappahannock County.
Makela says, “Party politics is not wanted in this county. When you get in your own backyard, we need to work together. I don’t think things will change. They want to keep things the way they are.”
Cordani will be on
School Board
Rebecca Cordani had indicated, back in August when her son was, born with a heart defect, that she*, wanted to have her name removed off the ballot for the School Board election.
Recently after the Nov. 2 election, Cordani indicated that even though she won the election, she was unsure whether or not she would take the position. She said she would have to consult with a few people.
