The Rappahannock 4-H Dairy Goat Club recently visited the Virginia Department of Agriculture’s Warrenton Regulatory Laboratory.
Dr. Joe Garvin gave a tour and explained how the lab could assist goat owners. He discussed various tests that are performed at the lab, that could improve herd health. At the conclusion of the meeting, club members were permitted to watch the necropsy of a calf.
Dr. Garvin discussed the general anatomy and physiology of the calf as he looked for the cause of the calf’s death.
At the club’s first meeting in September, Devin Day was elected president. Club members planned a schedule for the year and agreed that the purpose of the club would be to learn goat keeping skills while preparing to compete in goat shows.
