must address the issues liaised in last week’s paper concerning the defeat of the incumbent School Board ipember for Jackson District since my name was mentioned in one letter. The writers of these letters are themselves the spreaders of “misinformation and half-truths.” - It is a fact that Rappahannock County Elementary was rated “accred-. ited with warning.” This was reported on the front page of the Rapp News dated Oct. 13. This article alluded to the eighth grade results as the probable reason for the lowered rating but did not mention just what these results were.
The eighth grade results are: English 74 out of 132 school divisions, History 52, Science 22 and Math 126 out of 132 school divisions. - Ladies and gentlemen, ^hen 15 students out of 90 pass their math test, when passing on some of these SOL tests is actually below 50 percent correct answers, and when you stop to consider that the eighth graders are the first class required to meet the standards, our current School Board should Save contemplated resigning.
Dr. Gangel’s own handouts to the Supervisors prove there was not “an across the board improvement in every subject for every grade from the previous year”, as Mr. Kohler’s letter stated.
On the question of the county’s bonded indebtedness for the additions to the high school, the County Attorney informed the Board of Supervisors that the request for a referendum must originate with the School Board on such issues. The fact that School Superintendent, Dr. Gangel, stated the need to apply for Fall ‘98 bond sales and to release bid packages in the Winter of ‘98-99 for a piore favorable bidding climate may have driver this request instead of the voter’s
