Quercus macrocarpa is the Latin name of the bur oak. “Quercus” is the genus of all oaks and is the classical Latin name for these trees. “Macro-” translates into large, which this acorn surely is, and “carpa” means fruit, in this case, an acorn. “Fruit” is a botanical term for seeds of any kind.
