For many years, elected officials of this County have been
chosen through non-partisan political campaigns during which differences among competing candidates were debated openly and fairly.
Not so this year.
This year some of the local Republican party leadership resorted to last-minute smear attacks on several candidates, falsifying their records and positions on the issues. Republicans and Democrats of this county should unite in protesting this mud-slinging partisanship that serves only to cloud important issues and alienate voters.
In particular, not only did the letter which was sent out by the local Republican leaders to voters in Amissville contain unfounded attacks on School Board member, Ron Makela; it even more outrageously smeared Rappahannock County’s schools, including our dedicated teachers, administrators and students.
Republican party leaders Ron Frazier and Walt Longyear should apologize to the citizens of Rappahannock County for the inexcusable material that was sent out under their aegis.
