Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. confronted his mortality with the words: “You may have heard before this of the death of my wife, which not only takes away a half of my life but gives me notice. She was the same age as I and at 88 the end is due. I may work on for a year or two, but I cannot hope to add much to what I have done. I am too skeptical to think that it matters much, but too conscious of the mystery of the universe to say that it or anything else does not. I bow my head, I think serenely, and say as I told someone the other day, O CosmosNow lettest thou thy ganglion dissolve in peace.”
