I am now reasonably sure I can identify oaks in summer, when they are in leaf. With some species such as the black oak, Quercus velutina, I can give it a name in winter by a close look at its velvPty buds. The red oak, Quercus rubra, has leaves very similar to those of the black oak, but its end buds are smooth and have a reddish, varnished look.
