Do we get any benefit from the light spilling into the sky? Actually, no. For example, most of the lights used do not help decrease crime except in some instances. Light pollution in the sky also decreases the ability of astronomers to study the sky and prevents us from seeing what a night sky looks like. And, running the outside lights costs a great deal of money.
So why do we light the sky? Is it so we can send close to $66 per year to the electric company to keep our $30 light burning? Or is it so we feel safe? The commonly used 175 watt mercury “security” light decreases in intensity over five to ten years, but costs the same amount to run.
