After a eight year run, Mary Carlson will close her bed and breakfast the week before Christmas. She has had a long, successful career with her B & B. But the business has kept her away from seeing her grandchildren grow up.
Carlson says, “I missed everything with my grandchildren. But I enjoyed it very much and my husband let me do it.”
“I had the opportunity to meet so many different people. And many, many interesting people from all over.”
The Rappahannock News asked Carlson what were some of the memorable moments over the years, “My favorites are the younger people. They have so much energy and they’re not set in their ways.”
“We hear so much about the things that people do, unpleasant things. So many young people have great potential. They are so bright that it gives me hope.”
“They totally enjoy being here and seeing the ducks and everything.”

Carlson has watched the B & B business flourish in this county and become extremely competitive. Due to repeat business, she has managed to compete in the expanding market.
Carlson says, “A lot of repeat business gave me great satisfaction and said, you’re doing things right.”
“When I’ve told people I won’t be here next fall, they’ve been very upset and that makes me feel very good.” Memorable moments
