ed to be able to play and teach the sport that they are hired to coach. They are also responsible that their players maintain a certain grade point average, complete homework, show excellent sportsmanship in practices and in games, and, yes, they even handle discipline issues.
But, the list does not end here. Their most important job as a coach is to instill in these young adults that they are a part of society, and they have to learn to respect others, work hard for what they want, be responsible for their own actions, and learn to trust and be trusted. So, is the “best” coach someone who knows how to win, or is it someone who can steer these students onto the path of becoming successful adults?
I was fortunate enough to be a successful athlete at RCHS. I played basketball, volleyball, and softball. I was on a “winning” team and a “losing” team. I don’t think I am scarred for life because I played on a team that didn’t win even half of their games for five years in a row. I also don’t think that my life is so wonderful now because I was the pitcher for the best softball team to come through RCHS.
