The success of Athletic Director Jon Smythe's foray into the world of RCPS football brought out some vocal opposition at Tuesday night’s School Board meeting. Negative public comments and a statement by one School Board member w ho voiced her points of opposition to a football program were compelling enough for Chairman Wesley Mills to call for a public hearing on the issue. That hearing was tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, April 23 at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Chairman Mills also said that only preprepared questions be considered at the hearing, and asked that any questions be submitted by April 16 to the inquirer’s School Board representative.
The football discussion was launched by the public comments of Bill Dietel. Mr. Dietel used his five minutes to chastise the Board for the approach by which a football program seems to be developing and for permitting itself “to be pressured" into accepting such a program. He said that he would not discuss the pros and cons of football in Rappahannock County, but he did express skepticism that a football program could be financially selfsustaining. and he pointed out that football would negatively impact educational programs and put undue pressure on facilities, personnel, and school administration.
