This was not our first time in the city. Several weeks earlier on Feb. 28 the high school class journeyed to D C. for the conclusion of a month long course on African culture and history.
The students first visited the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art. Having already created their own version of African masks in the classroom, they were able to see a collection of authentic masks, sculptures, and personal objects at the museum.
As stomachs began to rumble for lunch, we drove to Meskerem, and authentic Ethiopian restaurant in Adam’s Morgan. The experience of sharing the same dish and eating with their hands was a shock for some of the students, but they all caught on quickly to this communal style of dining.
After enjoying a delicious and filling meal, we ended our adventure at the Museum of Natural History with an incredible IMAX film about Africa's Serengeti. The day was truly a feast for our heads, hearts and hands (as well as our taste buds!).
At Hearthstone our small class size allows us the freedom and spontaneity to supplement our inclass learning with the wealth of resources that reside in our extended community. We believe it is important to broaden academic education with real life experiences. Now that warmer weather has arrived, we look forward to a plenitude of opportunities for future excursions!
