lhe amount ot money the State of Virginia contributes to each county or city school system is determined by a complex formula called the Local Composite Index or LCI. The LCI uses a combination of the total Adjusted Gross Income, the total Value of Real Estate, and the total amount of taxable Retail Sales in the county or city and divides these totals by the number of students in the school system. t Rappahannock County’s ability to fund our school system ranks tenth from the top of the 136 school divisions in Virginia. Because of our apparent wealth „ (we rank 8th in property value 1 and 14th in income) and small * number of students, we pay for , approximately 70 percent of our -School Budget with local property taxes. By comparison, Page County property owners have to provide only 30 percent of their school costs.
