hammering - these lessons offer students much practice in the more subtle arts of cooperation, as they learn to solve technical and interpersonal problems and work together toward a common goal.
• In his current Math Block, teacher Chris Porter is working on a hands-on project with his middle school students. They have constructed a scale model, and are making plans to build a full scale geodesic dome.
Constructed out of straight lengths of metal conduit bolted together into a series of pentagons, the dome will be 8’ high and 16’ in diameter. “Middle school students need to be active,” observes Porter, and this project indeed engages them actively on many levels. Geodesic domes are famous for their intrinsic stability, and this one will become a central feature on the Hearthstone playground.
