The remainder of the School Board appeared to be supportive of Mr. Smythe’s pursuit of football, and they joined Frank Warner in positively reacting to the prospect. Mr. Warner said that he recognized that the funding was not available in the school budget for a football program but he noted the significance of the private donations and the evidence presented that football is self-supporting in high schools and colleges. He pledged to “buy-a-player” and said that he is in favor of a football program “if we can get it started with private funds.”
