The grass is growing so fast, but the wild onions grow even faster. The cows love the onions, but I can remember what a terrible taste it gave to the cow’s milk.
The family cow was so important to the families of long ago. It provided food for each meal, plus it meant an extra income. A large family consumed many different types of milk products.
I never learned to milk, but my mother and older sisters would milk seven cows each morning and night. I received some heckling because “who ever heard of a girl raised on a farm and never learned to milk?” I don’t believe I missed anything by not learning.
It was my job to go find the cows and drive them into the cow pen if they did not come in on their own. I loved to walk where they had been laying down, it was so warm, but you had to be careful where you stepped.
