In his lessons, specifically Algebra and Geometry, Mr. Porter strives to present math “as a gateway to the imagination” rather than a dry, abstract process. “Math is made relevant through Geometry” he explains, because it deals with the relationship of the human being to his/her physical surroundings. “High schoolers really want to understand the relevancy of the subjects they’re being asked to study”.
In Geometry, the lessons begin with this relationship to the physical world. But in addition to learning and practicing theorems, they are also exploring the quality of pure mathematics to raise thought to higher levels of insight and awareness.
• Elsewhere around the “Hearth”, students in the High School are participating in ongoing studio courses in Clay and Metal Sculpture with artist Charles Flickinger. Students start by modeling the human head in clay. Nest are the hands and feet and then finally the sculpting of the human form in full.
