Americans are challenging the notion of prolonging life at all costs and are seeking humane and legal ways to have some say about the way they die. Many are turning to advance directives, which are one way of making one’s wishes known and increasing the odds that they will be honored. An advance directive is a legal document that contains instructions about a person's future medical care in the event he or she becomes incapacitated. A living will specifies what treatments a person does (or does not) want in case of a terminal illness, coma, or other near death experience. while a health care proxy designates a person to make decisions for the person who cannot speak for him or her self. While such documents do not always receive the kind of attention one would hope they might, they are one step you can take to help ensure that you have some say about the quality of your life once you no longer are able to fend for yourself.
