Mr. Dietel was joined in his opposition by Mark Wallace and Katherine Treanor. Mr. Wallace, soccer coach in tiie Rappahannock Soccer League, referenced his Letter-to-the-Editor in the Rappahannock News and reiterated his concern about the “wisdom of a football program” and the potential for contention over facilities and financial resources. Mrs. Treanor said that she was “not opposed to football per se,” but asked whether this was the proper time and place for a football program, especially given the fiscal climate. One core point in her opposition appeared to be the competition by various educational and athletic programs for financial donations-she said, in fact, that she “didn't know that donations to a football program is the best use of donated funds.” Brian Taylor provided a student perspective on the football issue. He said that “It’s great that we’re getting a football team, but the track needs improvement.”
Athletic Director Jon Smythe, who was present at the meeting to update the Board on the progress of the football program initiative, expressed positive surprise at Delegate Louderback’s presentation of the softball resolution, and negative surprise at the public comments in opposition to a football program.
