Though increased exposure to liability led the Washington Town Council to forgo the 2002 Independence Day celebration, Mayor Stew Willis suggested an alternative that would gather Towrn residents for a more subdued event. After some discussion amongst Town Council members and residents in attendance at the May meeting of the Washington Town Council, a consensus was reached to celebrate the Fourth of July on the Sixth of July with a picnic at the home of the Mayor and Eve Willis.
The Mayor suggested too that the Town invite those who work in Washington, as well as members of the Fourth of July committee that attempted to fill in for the RAAC committee that has managed the event in recent years.
The Town-only celebration will be a pot-luck picnic, sans fireworks.

Mayor Willis reported that a meeting had been scheduled for May 10 with the Virginia Department of Health and the Town’s consultants to continue the approval process for the proposed Avon Hall wastewater treatment site. The Mayor said that
