Joy Heddleston, in her speech, used Webster’s definition of patriotism—"love for or devotion to one’s country”. She stated that “Americans demonstrate patriotism each time they recite the Pledge of Allegiance or sing any one of our many patriotic songs”. She went on to say that “patriotism happens when people are willing to work together, no matter how different they are”. She concluded her speech with a strong statement that “patriotism means God and country — people loving people and perhaps someday, people everywhere marching together to “Amazing Grace”.
The contest was judged by three distinguished citizens from Culpeper and Rappahannock Counties. Serving from Rappahannock was Mary Ann Kuhn, an award winning journalist with the Washington Post and Washington Star newspapers and a former producer of the CBS Evening News and presently owner of the Middleton Inn, Washington.
