The Salem Ruritan Club held its annual oratorical contest for sixth and seventh grade students living in Culpeper or Rappahannock on May 7. The two winners were Joy Elizabeth Heddleston, a sixth grader and daughter of April and Jon Heddleston of Sperryville and Spencer Meads, a seventh grader and son of Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Meads of Culpeper.
The contest begins at the school level, including students who are being home schooled. One boy and one girl could be selected from each school’s competition (or those being home schooled) for the final contest held at the Salem Ruritan Club. Thirteen students competed, seven girls and six boys.
From Rappahannock at Wakefield Country Day School: Joy Elizabeth Heddlston, won first place for the girls.
Also competing was Home Schooler: Adam Rhein of Washington, who won second place.
The other children were from Culpeper County.
The two first place winners will each receive a $500 scholarship for use at a college, university, or trade or vocational school. All winners received a medallion-bronze for third place; silver for second place; and gold for first place. The $500 scholarship prize will be invested by the Salem Ruritan Foundation until the winner graduates from high school and is accepted at an appropriate school. Payment at that
