“How could I explain to people that I could not even make my 3 year old son, Scott, do something as simple as sit and eat a peanut butter sandwich for lunch!” Cathy and John had two children ages one and three. They were demoralized and frustrated by their child.
Similarly, Scott presented challenging behavior for teachers at preschool. With the support of an early intervention program, the parents and school worked together to learn new ways of setting limits and motivating Scott. A year later Scott had improved behavior both at home and at school. Had his pattern of non-compliance with adults continued, far more costly services may have been needed.
The cost of treatment and services for children and families who may require community support when they are older far exceeds the cost of prevention and early intervention. Effective prevention programs support families in raising their children.
These programs promote the safety and well-being of children and families and hold potential for greatly increasing academic success and emotional growth. Some programs are designed to provide support for young parents to learn how to encourage the emotional and physical development of their young children. Other programs aim to identify children who may have some developmental delays and provide services to help a child achieve his/her potential. To support parents and other family members, a variety of services may be needed.
