Wakefield Country Day School students had an extended winter break, when their “Winter Sports Week” had an extra two days added because of the recent snowstorm. Students took advantage of the great ski and snow boarding conditions at Wintergreen and Massanutten, and One Wakefield family traveled as far as the Austrian Alps.
WCDS students in kindergarten through eighth grade recently participated in “Jump Rope for Heart,” as part of their physical education curriculum, raising over $2,000 for the American Heart Association. Funds were collected by generating “pledges” from parents and friends to support the number of minutes students could jump rope without interruption. The student who generated the most donations was kindergartener Tatumn Vaught, who raised $225. Over a period of two weeks, WCDS Physical Education teacher Julie Vaught prepared the students for the event, building their jumping endurance from one, to three, and eventually up to five minute increments without a pause. The overall winner of the competition was sixth grader Bret Heddleston, who jumped for eight minutes without missing a beat.
