By 1994, with his vines planted in the ground, the dream of bringing happiness to others was taking hold. All Whittaker needed now was a winemaker.

Whittaker caught the attention of local winemaker, Chris Pearmund, now the owner of Pearmund Cellars in Broad Run, Va.

Using a combination of grapes from several locations, the first bottles bearing the Unicorn label were put to the test at the 2000 Virginia State lair, with their 1999 Chardonnay and Viognier both taking gold medals.
