The National Organization
of Women (NOW) recently denounced President Bush’s proposal to reform Social Security by giving workers the option of diverting a percentage of their taxes into personal retirement accounts. In a statement on the issue, NOW President Kim Gandy makes more erroneous assertions than I can list in one article, but let’s juxtapose some of her rhetoric with reality.
First, Gandy asserts that “Women are more vulnerable to the reduction in benefits that will accompany privatization, because we have smaller benefits to begin with, and...are less likely...to have a pension or other means to supplement those reduced benefits.” Leaving aside the glaring failure to explain how women or anyone else wifi deal with the “reduction in benefits” from Social Security’s
