Proud parents and athletes packed into the Rappahannock County high school auditorium last week, anxiously awaiting the award of honors from the winter sports season.
The school’s athletic director, J.D. Almond opened the presentation, representing the girls’ basketball program as head varsity coach.
Almond praised his team for pulling together this season and for the growth the team has sustained.
“We jokingly had one goal this season and we reached that goal,” Almond laughed, “we got one more win than the boys’ (basketball team) did.”
Almond placed the task of narrowing down candidates for Most Valuable Player to his team, and their choice was junior Courtney Hutcheson.
“She showed up for every game and led the team in points and field goals,” the coach praised.
As for the Coach’s Choice award, Almond’s pick was jumoi Noel Johns.
“Everyone on the team worked hard, but this award definitely has to go to Noel,” Almond said.
The girls’junior varsity basketball team was coached by Stefanie Shaw this season, earning a 12-9 record.
“The recipient of my Most Valuable Player award works hard on and off the court,” Shaw said as she presented eighth grader Ella Miller a trophy.
Shaw continued as she presented Emily Carter, also an eighth grader the Coach’s Choice award.
“She (Carter) is so coachable, and also has the highest grade point average on the team,” Shaw said, “she has such a strong character and determination.”
