Lastly, at a breakfast meeting at the Washington Baptist Church, we spoke of how community members can help students succeed. Here are five ways that we can help our students realize their dreams:

1. Send kids positive messages like “You Can Do It!” and “Keep Going!”

2. Create a scholarship, internship, or summer/weekend job for a student.

3. Take students to a college campus.

4. Ask students about their academics; let them know that learning is fun and important and that college will prepare them for most of the jobs available today.

5. Remind students not to be scared of the cost of college. With financial aid, college is a reachable goal for everyone.
