In the more than 10 years that Chappell has been familiar with the Rappahannock County school system, this was only the second time that he can recall the system dealing with a bomb threat.
With multiple juveniles identified, Sheriff Larry Sherertz said. “We are pleased with how quickly we reacted and worked with the school to restore confidence that there was not a bad situation in the school.”
Students were soon allowed into the gym. According to Chappell, the State Police, Sheriff’s Department, personnel, and school administrators at the scene agreed to the following procedure. Dogs, officers and school administrators would search the gym area first, followed by the commons area, then the remainder of the building. People would gradually re-occupy the portions of the building that had been cleared. The State Police officer on the scene said that many schools, depending on the situation, opt not to evacuate for bomb threats. “The Rappahannock County schools will continue to take threats seriously and to take firm action with perpetrators,” said Chappell.
By 12:15 the whole area was deemed clear and Roger Mello quickly addressed the students to inform them of the situation. “We will all now sit down as a school staff and discuss our experiences with the drill; both what we did well and what we can improve.
