Organic integrity maintenance includes actions that would prevent contamination of organic production with prohibited materials and prevent commingling of organic and conventional products. This even includes using organic seeds for production.
In order for a farm to be certified organic, synthetic fertilizers and pesticides must not have been used on the land for a full three years before the harvest of an initial organic crop.
Buffer zones must also be made around the organic farm to ensure that pesticides do not drift from off-farm contamination.
“We are fortunate,” Waldo said, “that our neighbors are not in agriculture production.”
In livestock production, especially cattle, organic farms must protect waterways to avoid contamination by the cattle itself.
At the Washing! m farm, containment fencing does not allow cattle to contaminate the watershed, which is part of the reason Sunnyside Farms Institute was honored in November 2004 by the Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District for their farming practices.
