The Soap Box Derby started nationally in 1934 in Dayton, OH. Culpeper hosted an All-American Soap Box Derby in 1949 and then not again until 2003 when Rosson & Troilo hosted the Soap Box Derby of Culpeper, with 35 drivers.
Driving divisions
• The Stock Division is for racers age 8 to 17 years old. The cars can accommodate a racer up to (approx.) 5’3” tall and 125 lbs. The Stock car, a leaning-forward design, is sold as a kit which includes everything needed for racing with the exception of Z-Glaz Racing Wheels and “added” weight. This car cannot be painted, but is available in white, blue, red, and yellow; decaling and stencils are preferred. Builders should allow 8 to 12 hours to assemble their car. The Stock kit can be purchased for $515 to $530 (price includes wheels and helmet), plus shipping and handling.
• The Super Stock Division is for racers age 8 to 17 years old. The cars can accommodate a racer up to (approx.) 6’0” tall and 150 lbs.
