WATERY GRAVES * Although bodies have been committed to the depths of the ocean and various inland bodies of water for centuries, few people are aware that this type of burial is available. Human remains may be buried at sea in accordance with regulations based on the Marine Protection, Research, and Sanctuary Act. Sea burial of non-cremated remains must take place at least three nautical miles from shore, and the water at the burial location must be a minimum of six hundred feet deep. The remains must be weighted so as to sink quickly to the bottom and remain there. Cremated remains are not subject to those depth requirements, provided that the burial takes place three or more nautical miles from land.
