Like many adults who are moved to mentor a young person, Susan remembered being mentored herself. “I had a mentor my first year of teaching in Minnesota. The woman in the classroom next to me was a single lady and kind of took me under her wing. Your first year of teaching is a big learning experience. I married the following summer, and she gave me an antique trunk that I still have.”

Christene is a delightful child and veiy “easy to mentor,” according to Jones —“she takes instruction well and wants help. It takes a village to raise a child, as the saying goes, and Christene has had that village to support her. Last week in the band room, I watched her from a distance as she walked up and introduced herself to a parent of another child, shook hands. Watching her grow up like that, seeing that self-confidence, was so exciting.”
