Thirteen-year-old Christene remembers her first meeting with her mentor, Susan Jones.
“I was happy! We were at my house, sitting at the table drawing. She was talking about things I liked and asked me to dritw^something” said Christene.
Nearly five years later, Susan Jones still has that drawing, and remembers well the first time she met Christene and her family at their home. “All the mentors are nervous at the first meeting, but Christene’s family was so warmly receiving of me that my nervousness evaporated very soon,” recalled Jones.
Susan and Christene, who have been spending time together since the early spring of2001, were matched through the Starfish Mentoring Program, a Headwaters initiative that has been serving the Rappahannock community since 1997. “Christene came home from school one day with a flyer about the mentoring program,” said Christene’s mother. Christene, who was eight at the time, discussed it with her mom, and decided she would like to have a mentor. Soon Christene and Susan were meeting weekly.
