The Scrabble School was built in the early 1920s, with the local AfricanAmerican community donating most of the labor and over half the construction funds. About 25 percent of the funds were contributed in the form of a challenge grant from The Rosenwald Foundation as part of a program that eventually helped build over 4,000 schools for AfricanAmerican children throughout the South. The Scrabble site was donated by Wood Grant for purposes of building the school. The school operated from 1922 to 1967, educating area children during the days before desegregation. It had two classrooms, one for grades 1-3 and the other for grades 4-7, separated by a folding partition. As many as 100 students could be at school on a given day. Alumni have
