museum to job shadowing an adult, young people in the program gain experiences and skills which they might otherwise miss. In recognition of National Mentoring Month, the Rappahannock News will feature a series of articles this January celebrating the Starfish program, the people who make it work, and its many benefits to young people and adults alike.
The name Mentor, originally a character in Homer’s Odyssey, became proverbial for a faithful and wise adviser. In a modem youth mentoring program, a young person is matched with an adult volunteer who becomes a trusted friend and guide. Researchers have found that supportive relationships with non-pare'ntal adults are among the critical “developmental assets” that help young people to thrive and to grow into healthy, successful adults themselves. This week we tell the story of one such partnership.
Since that first day in 2001, Christene and Susan’s weekly meetings have included walks and boat rides, baking and music lessons, dinners and movies and carnivals-^-and lots of homework help. “It helps her quite a bit with her grades,” reported her mother. “It also helps to expose Christene to different cultures, different kinds of people.” Christene’s brother has also been a mentee in the Starfish program. “Both of my
