before Viewtown even had a name, a number of homes dating to the 1700s dotted the surrounding landscape. Near the Thornton River are houses associated with the Duncan and Nelson families, each ca. 1750s. Not far away are two dwellings from the Bywaters farm, one of which dates to 1703. Possibly the best known of these old houses is “Melville” located near “Forest Hill”. Sometimes called the “old Amiss home”, “Melville”, dates from the mid 1700s. Built by Joseph Amiss, it was later acquired by Enoch Kite in the 1870s. Kite added a wing that fit so perfectly with the original building that the century-wide difference in the two sections of the house is indiscernible.
Several Viewtown public buildings with long histories include the Forest Grove Baptist Church and the old and new (but still old) Forest Grove Schools. The church and the older school, located near the church building, date from the 1880s. The newer school was built about 1912 and now serves as a social hall for the church.
Though the mercantile pursuits that gave the village its boost are now gone, Viewtown retains its rural charm. Swing down Viewtown road from Amissville sometime to check it out.
