In today’s era of highly specialized superstores, it might be difficult to imagine, but this and other general stores had a very real ‘cradle to grave’ coverage of human needs: both baby shoes and casket hardware were stocked along with nearly everything, and we do mean everything in between (ladies hats with twice-a-year personal fitting by a Baltimore specialist, ice, grocery, haircuts, tailor, etc.). And while you’re at it, if you already have everything else, why not throw in a post office for good measure.

Yiewtown might have been called Forest Hill except that when a local post office was established in 1890 regulations required a single name for the ppstal area.
