was for sale on the open market, sign down front, multiple listing service, the whole nine yards ... went up 72.2 percent. And that’s 25 percent more than we paid for it last year! What part of ‘fair market value’ don’t they understand?
Tell you what, I’ll give them the 72.2 percent increase on the house. Won’t even argue about it. I’ll even give them the 87.4 percent increase on a woodlot, that has been logged out since the last assessment. That’s right, it went up 87.4 percent and the marketable timber was removed from the woodlot. I guess they didn’t look at it. (Scratch that. It’s hard to believe they actually looked at anything.) But what I can’t get past is 1233 percent? That’s why I believed it was a joke. If is a joke.
So, just to make sure they were kidding (or not), right after Christmas ... and that’s right, folks, some of us still celebrate this holiday ... I called the number for an appointment. That was December 26. I got a message that said, “The party you have called is not available.” It didn’t say anything about the office being closed. Not knowing what sort of schedule the assessors worked on ... since then, I have found out they apparently only work under cloak of darkness ...
