Quail and whippoorwills are ground nesting birds. They have little defense at nesting time against foxes and hawks, once they are discovered. A friend of mine, Don Winland, lives up against the Shenandoah National Park. He recently told me of his concern about a perceived „ decline in the ruffed grouse population, another ground nesting bird, about the size of a bantam chicken. When he first mentioned it, I was a bit skeptical. Grouse are pretty reclusive, secretive birds, and old ‘ruff doesn’t hang around your back yard like robins and cardinals.
