The shot that killed “Hasty Hobo” came from the woods across the Thornton River from the pasture. According to Smith, police immediately suspected that the incident had a hunting connection, and canvassed the property of Hitchen’s neighbors to find out who had gone hunting that day. Snyder, who had been hunting with permission on the property of Hitchen’s neighbor, Lucky Macoy, was interviewed by the RCSO on December 14, just ten days after the shooting. Snyder’s hunting rifle was taken into possession by the RCSO. Months later, bullets fired from that gun were compared to a bullet recovered from the corpse of Hasty Hobo, and were discovered to be a match.
