based on a series of articles dealing with billions of dollars worth of oil in the so-called tidelands or marginal sea, claimed by both the coastal states and the Federal Government. The stories led to the withdrawal by then President Truman of the name of Edwin W. Pauley, oilman, as nominee for Undersecretary of the Navy, after a Senate hearing at which Pauley was accused of saying he could raise hundreds of thousands of dollars in Democratic campaign funds if the Justice Department would drop its claim to the tidelands oil. Pauley denied the accusation made by Interior Secretary Harold L. Ickes, but in the subsequent furor his name was withdrawn. Ickes, last member of the New Deal cabinet named by President Roosevelt, and held over by Truman, resigned from the Cabinet saying he would not perjure himself for the Truman administration. Although the United States Supreme Court eventually upheld Federal ownership of the oil-rich tide-lands, quit-claim legislation was subsequently passed by Congress giving control to the coastal states to the three mile limit. Mr. Harris also is a co recipient of an American Newspaper Guild Award, winner of the Agricultural Writers Award of Distinction bu the University of California a Los Angles where he received his Master’s Degree, and by Washington University in St. Louis which gave him its Outstanding Achievements Award. During the Harris’ four day stay at the Plaza Hotel they visited their daughter Miss Linda Gail Harris who has an apartment in New York and does youth counseling work.
