The Rappahannock boys varsity soccer team defeated the Strasburg Rams yesterday afternoon in the Bull Run Tournament quarterfinals 3-0. They advanced to the semifinals Wednesday to face the state champion Eagles of Clarke County.
Rappahannock was in the face of the Ram’s defenders and their goalie from the second the whistle blew till the end with an aggressive style of play and a mindset to get ahead early and stay there. But Rappahannock’s defense was the big story. Coach Shay Bell had his players using a defensive style called the “low defensive strategy” where defenders did not press the Ram offense. With more defenders in the backfield, the strategy was successful, giving the Panthers a shut out win. The Panthers suffocated the Rams and stifled their offense, beating them to every loose ball and appeared to be one step ahead of Strasburg the entire match.
