Potomac were “mine, all mine” to Lord F. The good Lord sold or granted chunks of this property in our area to various folks before his death in 1781. That was all well and good, except that, given the frontier aspects of our environs at that tender point in our history, other land barons or wannabes had been independently ‘acquiring’ and trading parcels in the same area. Hummm — lots of potential for trouble!
One of the trouble spots was that the Governor of Virginia had been making land grants somewhat in parallel with the English kings and no one had paid much attention to the details. So it was that, in the 1730s, one James Barbour, a contemporary of Alexander Spotswood, founder of the Germanna Colony (and father of the first Western expansion in US history to the Blue Ridge) acquired numerous tracts in the Piedmont and Blue Ridge from folks who had been granted that land by the governor. However, the land ‘twas all also a part of the Fairfax domain.
