France. In the West generally, someone who takes his religion seriously tends to be viewed as odd, even radical. Such a person threatens the materialistic assumptions of the consumer society and challenges the modem idols of democracy and the nation state.
And so it was during the Algerian War for Independence (1954-62) when Bishop LeonEtienne Duval put his loyalty to the Gospels above loyalty to France. Duval became a hero to Arabs and a traitor to French nationalists by insisting on his duty to serve and respect all his flock— Muslims and Christians alike. The monks were part of Duval’s legacy to Algeria, a church of universal fraternity. His spirit was echoed by the refusal of the monks to stigmatize the GIA with the label “terrorist.” Instead, they were “the brothers of the mountains” and the army were “the brothers of the plain.”
