In the year 1943, wearing

the olive-drab uniform of a GI and still back in the states, I visited a friend of mine. On his wall was a framed Biblical quotation from Romans 8:31. “If God be for us, who can be against us?”

Filled with hope as well as national pride, I left the following year for the European Theater of operations. While fighting with the 29th Infantry Division across the German Rhineland, I entered an abandoned house and suddenly came across a similarly framed quote which said “Wenn Gott fur uns ist, die gegen uns sein konnen.” Translated, “If God be for us, who can be against us?”
