DEQ versus the Friends of the Rush
Critics of Washington’s proposed wastewater system appear to have failed in convincing DEQ. The DEQ responses to public comments have been almost completely focused on disproving or invalidating FOTR objections to the permit.
While Haskell and others have submitted pictures of algae growth in the Rush, DEQ has maintained that after numerous inspections, there is not excessive algae growth in the Rush. DEQ received written comments that claimed Washington’s effluent would contain unusual amounts of certain chemicals due to the presence of the Inn at Little Washington and other bed and breakfasts, but DEQ said that Washington’s effluent would be within the bounds of the permit.
Overall, DEQ’s responses have been focused on holding Washington to a standard consistent with the requirements set on other other municipalities.
