Now this was particularly unnerving to a wet-behindthe-ears youth of 22 who had been brought up in the church but had not spent that much time delving into the practicalities of following the faith. Not knowing the reasons for God’s decisions then, any more than I do now, I did nevertheless see that a dilemma existed. Acknowledging that God could do anything He wished, I was still confused as to how He could be on both sides at the same time.
The exigencies of combat did not allow me the opportunity to pause and think this through, but the questions certainly lurked in the back of my mind. Where did God fit into the picture as our two sides fought each other? When our chaplains asked for our victory in God’s name, were they simultaneously asking for victory for the enemy?
