This is big news! Last week, I was down at the little creek that runs across the end of our yard. I was cleaning up shards of white quartz rocks that some visiting little boys thought it would be neat to bust into little pieces. Thankfully, they didn’t get any in their eyes.

While I was there, I wandered up to Linda’s new hosta garden looking for that northern water snake that likes to lay there and scare my wife and neighbor. Now, I’m not the kind that thinks the only good snake is a dead snake, hut these water snakes have a nasty disposition, and I would just as soon he go on somewhere else.

While I was there, I heard a mocking bird just raising the biggest ruckus you ever heard, and I thought there must be a crow or a hawk somewhere close. Then I realized he might be pestering that snake.

The mocker was in the lowest limbs of a big maple tree, where the foliage is particularly dense, and my thought was the snake must be on the
